ABA therapy in Alaska
Alaska Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2012. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.
Does Medicaid cover ABA in Alaska? Yes.
THE COVERAGE PATHWAY
ABA covered fee-for-service (no MCOs) for under-21s via EPSDT as Medicaid Autism Services under Division of Behavioral Health regs (7 AAC 135; rates at 7 AAC 160.900(d)(73)); Denali KidCare (CHIP) children included
WHO RUNS IT
Alaska Department of Health — Division of Health Care Services administers Medicaid/EPSDT; Division of Behavioral Health sets autism-services rates; provider assistance: mpassunit@alaska.gov; health.alaska.gov
You don’t have to memorize any of this — we work with Alaska’s system every day.
Getting approved, in three steps
Alaska requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.
1
Round up the diagnosis paperwork
An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.
2
We build and submit the plan
Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in Alaska — forms, follow-ups, and all.
3
Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.
Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.
The fine print, if you want it (Alaska’s exact rules)
Licensed behavior analyst submits a service authorization to Alaska Medicaid before treatment begins, with autism diagnosis, a 97151 behavioral assessment, and a signed ABA treatment plan whose hours match the request
Coverage details in Alaska
How many hours a week?
Alaska doesn't set one fixed number — hours are approved child by child. Hours authorized per individual treatment plan; supervision/group codes 97155+97158 limited to 52 hours per 6 months.
Private insurance has to help too
Not on Medicaid? Alaska’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: SB 74 (2012, effective 1/1/2013), AS 21.42.397; requires coverage of ASD diagnosis and treatment including ABA for individuals under 21; no annual dollar caps (age limit unenforceable under federal mental health parity)
Waiver programs worth knowing
Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In Alaska: IDD Waiver and ISW (Individualized Supports Waiver, ~$25,924/yr cost cap FY25), both run by Senior and Disabilities Services; ISW covers autism/IDD at ICF/IID level of care
What does ABA actually cost in Alaska?
Alaska Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $91 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
