ABA therapy in New Mexico

New Mexico Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2009. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.

Does Medicaid cover ABA in New Mexico? Yes.

THE COVERAGE PATHWAY

Covered under EPSDT via Turquoise Care (Medicaid managed care since July 2024); three-stage ABA benefit (Stage 1 diagnostic eval, Stage 2 assessment/Integrated Service Plan, Stage 3 treatment) per NMAC 8.321.2.13; delivered through MCOs BCBS of NM, Molina, and Presbyterian; covers ages 12 months-21, including at-risk children 12-36 months before formal diagnosis

Getting approved, in three steps

New Mexico requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.

    Round up the diagnosis paperwork

    An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.

  2. 2

    We build and submit the plan

    Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in New Mexico — forms, follow-ups, and all.

  3. 3

    Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.

    Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.

Autism Evaluation Practitioner (licensed psychologist or qualified physician) completes Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluation and Integrated Service Plan; BCBA develops treatment plan; direct treatment (97153) requires prior authorization renewed every 6 months (evals/assessments do not)

How many hours a week?

New Mexico doesn't set one fixed number — hours are approved child by child. Hours individualized in the ISP/treatment plan (industry norm ~10-25 hours a week focused, 26-40 hours a week comprehensive).

Private insurance has to help too

Not on Medicaid? New Mexico’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: Enacted 2009 (SB 39, effective Jan 2010); originally capped at age 19 (22 if in high school), $36,000/yr and $200,000 lifetime; HB 322 (2019) removed age and dollar caps

Waiver programs worth knowing

Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In New Mexico: Developmental Disabilities (DD) Waiver, Mi Via Self-Directed Waiver, Medically Fragile Waiver (Supports Waiver ended June 2026)

What does ABA actually cost in New Mexico?

New Mexico Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $79–$129 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
