ABA therapy in Mississippi
Mississippi Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2015. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.
Does Medicaid cover ABA in Mississippi? Yes.
THE COVERAGE PATHWAY
EPSDT benefit for under-21 (Miss. Admin. Code Title 23, Part 223, Rule 6.3; ASD services added via SPA 16-0020); most children served through MississippiCAN CCOs — Magnolia Health, Molina Healthcare, TrueCare (TrueCare replaced UnitedHealthcare 7/1/2025)
WHO RUNS IT
Mississippi Division of Medicaid (DOM), Office of the Governor; medicaid.ms.gov; 800-421-2408; MESA portal
You don’t have to memorize any of this — we work with Mississippi’s system every day.
Getting approved, in three steps
Mississippi requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.
1
Round up the diagnosis paperwork
An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.
2
We build and submit the plan
Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in Mississippi — forms, follow-ups, and all.
3
Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.
Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.
The fine print, if you want it (Mississippi’s exact rules)
Requires an autism diagnosis by a physician or licensed psychologist plus prior authorization of a treatment plan developed/supervised by a MS-licensed behavior analyst (LBA/BCBA), submitted by the provider to the CCO or DOM's UM/QIO (vendor name verify)
Coverage details in Mississippi
How many hours a week?
No Medicaid-published range — hours set per authorized EPSDT treatment plan; commercial mandate benchmark is up to 25 hours a week
Private insurance has to help too
Not on Medicaid? Mississippi’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: HB 885 (2015, effective July 15, 2015; Miss. Code §83-9-26): ABA capped at 25 hours a week, not required beyond age 8, no dollar cap; some insurers voluntarily removed age caps; Medicaid EPSDT (to 21) NOT subject to these caps
Waiver programs worth knowing
Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In Mississippi: ID/DD Waiver (1915(c), MS Dept of Mental Health Bureau of IDD; multi-year waitlist); 1915(i) IDD Community Support Program
What does ABA actually cost in Mississippi?
Mississippi Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $60–$97 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
