ABA therapy in South Carolina

    Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in South Carolina — forms, follow-ups, and all.

    Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.

    Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.

The ABA provider requests prior authorization from SCDHHS (FFS) or the member's MCO with a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation confirming ASD and a treatment plan; families are directed to contact an enrolled ASD provider to initiate the auth

Private insurance has to help too

Not on Medicaid? South Carolina’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: Ryan's Law enacted 2007 (effective July 2008) - one of the first state mandates; up to $50,000/yr for behavioral therapy through age 16 for children diagnosed by age 8; caps of this kind are generally unenforceable under federal MHPAEA parity for covered plans

Waiver programs worth knowing

Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In South Carolina: BHDD/DDSN-operated HCBS waivers: Community Supports (CS) Waiver, Intellectual Disability/Related Disabilities (ID/RD) Waiver and Head and Spinal Cord Injury (HASCI) Waiver; the autism-specific PDD waiver ended Dec 31 2017 when ABA moved to the state plan

What does ABA actually cost in South Carolina?

South Carolina Medicaid reimburses ABA providers roughly $60 per hour for one-on-one therapy (rates differ by clinician credential and setting). That's what the state pays us — with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
