ABA therapy in North Dakota
North Dakota Medicaid covers ABA for eligible kids, and the state has required private insurance to cover autism care since 2018. Here’s how it actually works — and how we handle the messy parts for you.
Does Medicaid cover ABA in North Dakota? Yes.
THE COVERAGE PATHWAY
Covered as the 'Autism ABA service' under EPSDT for children under 21 (fee-for-service; no MCOs); requires ASD diagnosis from PCP/qualified provider plus a current ND Health Tracks (EPSDT) screening recommending ABA; separate Medicaid Autism Spectrum Disorder waiver adds family supports
WHO RUNS IT
North Dakota Health and Human Services, Medical Services Division (ND Medicaid), (800) 755-2604; Autism Services unit within HHS
You don’t have to memorize any of this — we work with North Dakota’s system every day.
Getting approved, in three steps
North Dakota requires paperwork before therapy is covered. Here’s the whole process from your side of the table — we do the rest.
1
Round up the diagnosis paperwork
An autism diagnosis from a qualified provider is the key that opens coverage. Already have it? You’re ahead. If not, we’ll help you find an evaluation.
2
We build and submit the plan
Your BCBA assesses your child and writes the treatment plan. Then we file it with the right reviewer in North Dakota — forms, follow-ups, and all.
3
Coverage confirmed. Therapy starts.
Once the plan signs off, sessions begin. Most families who qualify start within 2–3 weeks. Approvals renew on a schedule — we track it so you never think about it.
The fine print, if you want it (North Dakota’s exact rules)
Family obtains annual approval letter from ND Medicaid (PCP diagnosis + Health Tracks screening recommending ABA); provider agency then submits web-based service authorization twice yearly (annual + 180-day update) with BCBA-written care plan justifying hours per week
Coverage details in North Dakota
How many hours a week?
North Dakota doesn't set one fixed number — hours are approved child by child. Hours requested per care plan with justification, majority delivered by RBT; 6-month progress reviews.
Private insurance has to help too
Not on Medicaid? North Dakota’s autism insurance law makes state-regulated private plans cover autism care — you’d pay your plan’s normal deductible and copays. The rule on the books: No statute; ND Insurance Department bulletin (July 2018, compliance by Jan 1, 2019) requires state-regulated plans to cover autism treatment including ABA at parity with medical/surgical benefits (48th state); no specific age/dollar caps in bulletin
Waiver programs worth knowing
Waivers can add services or open Medicaid eligibility even when family income is too high. In North Dakota: Medicaid Autism Spectrum Disorder Waiver (birth through age 17; expanded to birth through age 20 effective Nov 1, 2025); DD (Traditional IID/DD) Waiver
What does ABA actually cost in North Dakota?
North Dakota doesn't publish one simple, current hourly rate for ABA — payment runs through its own model behind the scenes. What matters for your wallet: with Medicaid, most families pay nothing out of pocket.
